Wednesday, September 4th, Sintra, Portugal.
The Sintra Pro adventure kicked off back in 1996, and it’s the world’s longest-running event with a total of 28 editions in 29 years—what an achievement! We at the IBC World Tour want to give a big shoutout to the organizers for all their hard work and dedication over the years.
Yesterday marked the start of the waiting period for the second-to-last event of the IBC World Tour, taking place at Playa Grande. Just a reminder that this event will determine the world title for the Women’s division, where Japan’s Sari Ohhara and Brazil’s Maira Viana will be battling it out for this major milestone in their careers.
Plus, the Canary Islander Armide Soliveres could also become the world champion here in Sintra, but he’ll need to win this event; otherwise, the Men’s division title will be decided at the Gran Canaria Frontón King.
Today, the conditions have been pretty tough, with some big waves and a strong current at Playa Grande. In these kinds of conditions, the athletes’ physical fitness plays a huge role, making it a really challenging day for them.
Today, we’ve seen Rounds 1 and 2 of the Men’s division. The organizers decided to run a total of 16 heats, each lasting 30 minutes, due to the tricky conditions.
ROUND 1 MEN’S DIVISION
Around 8:30 AM, Round 1 of the Men’s Division kicked off. In the first heat, Spanish rider Daniel Paniagua really stood out, showing off his skills on the beach waves and making it through to the next round.
Australian Josh De Legh made his tour debut, taking first place in his heat. In the interview, he seemed super happy and pumped about the result.
Miguel Ferreira from Portugal did his homework, scoring the highest total in Round 1 with an impressive 14.17, plus he got the best wave score of 8 points—great performance from the Portuguese rider.
The Portuguese are riding like locals, and Francisco Ferreira advanced as the top rider, clearly showing his potential.
In his first-ever World Tour event, French rider Yoan Canevet was really stoked to come in first in his heat.
Noah Capdeville from France also had a solid showing, racking up 12 points and scoring 7 on his best wave. He’s another rider to watch in the upcoming rounds.
French rider Louka Zaninotto also did his part, making it to Round 2 in a heat with tricky conditions.
The eighth and final heat of Round 1 was super competitive, with French rider Arthur Buggle taking first place with a total of 12.4, closely followed by Australian Kai De Legh, who also qualified in second with 12 points.
ROUND 2 MEN’S DIVISION
Alright, we’re kicking off Round 2, and some athletes are stepping up to fight for a spot in the world top next year.
Heat 1 of Round 2 started off with a win for the young Canary Islander, David Pérez. After his victory last year at Frontón King, he’s definitely one of the contenders to break into the top ranks.
Salvador Rosa from Portugal did his thing and advanced to Round 3 in first place, ahead of Aussie Josh de Legh.
Rising star Ethan Pérez showed off his incredible skills again in his heat, finishing first, closely followed by Venezuelan Edwin Aldana.
The Portuguese duo, Joel Rodrigues and Francisco Ferreira, had a super exciting heat where Joel edged out Francisco by just half a point to move on.
Isaias Ravyc from Brazil dominated his heat with a total score of 12.5, while Portuguese Ricardo Rosmaninho secured the second spot to advance.
Frenchman Txomin López got the job done, qualifying with a score of 11.6, just ahead of Italian Genesio Ludovisi.
Kai De Legh from Australia has been showing his quality since Round 1 and managed to advance again. Louka Zaninotto from France also moved on in a very tight battle.
The last heat of the day was intense, featuring Frenchman Arthur Buggle, who scored 13 points, beating out his fellow countryman Simon Andrieux.
Tomorrow is Day 2 of the competition, and the organizers plan to continue with Rounds 3 and 4 of the Men’s division. The top 16 in the world will be competing for the title of world champion in the IBC World Tour 2024.
Conditions are looking good, so make sure to stay tuned and don’t miss the best bodyboarding action in the world!
