Another day of massive surf and heavy rips at the beautiful Anza Beach in Agadir. We woke up to some seriously gnarly conditions once again, making things tough for the comp. To survive out there, athletes have to be on top of their game both physically and mentally.
After knocking out the first two heats of Round 2 yesterday, the organizers gave the green light to resume the round today at 9:00 AM local time.
ROUND 2
Heat 3 started with a bang. Current Junior World Champ Louka Zaninotto (France) showed everyone what he’s made of, taking first with a 12.00 total. Local rider Boufouchk Ilias followed him into the next round in second.
In a super tight battle, France’s Txomin López and Tahitian Tahiri Tehei both punched their tickets to the next round. Txomin snagged the top spot after sticking a massive air roll that earned him a 7.75.
Venezuela’s Edwin Aldana took down a close heat ahead of Frenchman Pierre Louis Boisselier; both are moving on to Round 3.
Another Frenchman, Thibaud Berge, claimed the win in Heat 6, with Spain’s Daniel Paniagua taking second.
Brazil’s Andre Luiz Tavares managed to outwork Morocco’s Boulahia Hassan despite the brutal conditions.
The final heat of the day was an absolute showstopper. Italy’s Genesio Ludovisi put on a clinic, posting the highest total of the round (12.85) and the wave of the day (8.25) after sticking a huge roll on a bomb. South African Benjy Oliver took the second qualifying spot.
After Round 2 wrapped up, the crew decided to hold off on Round 3 until tomorrow, hoping for cleaner conditions.
Heads up: Round 3 is a non-elimination round, and the Top 16 in the World Rankings are about to join the mix. It’s going to be an absolute show at Anza Beach.
