LOCAL ATHLETES SHINE ON DAY TWO OF GRAN CANARIA FRONTÓN KING

Thursday, October 16, 2025, Gáldar, Gran Canaria, Spain.

The conditions in Gáldar were excellent, with no wind and great waves, just like yesterday.

A standout performance by the Canarian athletes deserves special mention, as many qualified for the main event, showcasing the tremendous potential of this discipline.

It was a spectacular day where the high level of competition made it a thrilling experience for fans in the stands and on the cliffs of the Frontón, as well as for the thousands watching via streaming who enjoyed the best bodyboarding show in the world.

  • Round 2 and 3 Men’s Division

The top Canarian performers in the Men’s Division were Gabriel Mendoza, William Luján, Daniel Quintana, Pablo Lecouey, and Yone Armas, all of whom qualified for the main event and will compete tomorrow alongside the top 16 in the world for the Men’s Division title.

The fantastic weather allowed for another amazing bodyboarding session, just like Wednesday, where Daniel Quintana emerged as one of the stars by earning the day’s highest score with a 9.25 for a wave that featured a tube, a backflip, and a roll, which earned him applause from all the fans present.

Another local, Borja Granados, scored 9 points after riding a long tube that seemed impossible to escape, finishing with a nice roll. He’s definitely an athlete who continues to make waves in this competition year after year.

Tomorrow, Borja Granados, Aitor Ojeda, Jonathan Vega, and two-time world champion and three-time Frontón King Amaury Lavernhe, along with Alexander Montes, the current junior world champion competing in the absolute category for the first time, will try to qualify for the main event as well.

Due to safety concerns, the event’s technical committee decided to halt the competition in the fourth heat of round three, as the waves had grown large and the low tide posed a significant risk to the athletes’ safety.

Once the remaining four heats of round three are completed, the 16 qualified riders will face off in the decisive stage of the competition against the 16 riders already ranked, the best in the world in bodyboarding. This includes six athletes still in the running for the title of the new world king.

Uri Valadão, Armide Soliveres (the reigning champion), Pierre-Louis Costes, Tristan Roberts, Badr Eddine, and Gabriel Braga will have a tough battle not just for the Gran Canaria Frontón King 2025 title but also for the dream of becoming a world bodyboarding champion, even though four of them have already tasted that honor, highlighting the incredible level of competition we can expect in the coming days.

  • Round 3 Junior Men’s Division

In the junior category, Australian Jai Taylor rode the best wave of the day with an 8.75, followed by French rider Louka Zaninotto with an 8.00 and Chilean Bastian Venegas with a 7.75.

The juniors continue their quest to become world champions.
