An Interview with Rising Star ILAN CHOUARD

At IBC, we’re stoked to introduce you to one of the newest breakout talents in world bodyboarding.

Born in Santa María Huatulco, Mexico, and currently living in San Agustinillo, this 15-year-old athlete has already shown us he’s got what it takes to hang with the world’s elite if he keeps up this momentum.

He’s been bodyboarding for seven years, lists the backflip as his go-to move, and besides being a fierce competitor, he’s charging massive waves despite his young age.

Ladies and gentlemen, here is our exclusive interview with the rising star:

ILAN CHOUARD

  • Tell us about growing up in Mexico.

I grew up in a small fishing village where life is super chill, and luckily, we get some pretty solid waves from time to time.

  • How’d you get into bodyboarding? What are your earliest memories?

I started when I was 8. I remember my friends basically forcing me into waves that totally terrified me back then.

  • You kicked off this year strong in Morocco, taking second in the Junior Men Rising Series and clinching your spot for the grand finale at the Gran Canaria Frontón King. How does it feel to podium in Morocco and hit that goal?

I’m so happy I made the podium in Morocco and secured my spot for the Frontón King finale. My goal in every contest is always to try and win, but honestly, if I can make it to the quarterfinals at El Frontón, I’d be stoked.

  • Where in the world would you love to travel?

I’d love to go to Hawaii. It’s definitely a dream of mine to surf Pipeline alongside the best athletes in the world.

  • What does it mean to you and the Mexican bodyboarding community to have a World Tour event back in Mexico?

The IBC event at Pascuales means a lot to all of us. We haven’t had a World Tour stop here since 2011, so we’re really grateful they’re putting our country back on the map and giving us this opportunity.

  • At just 14 years old, you put on a massive show in the Men’s Pro category at the last Frontón King. What was it like out there in such heavy surf surrounded by the world’s best?

Honestly, it was a dream come true to compete against the world elite in the Pro category. Since I hadn’t qualified for the Junior Tour that year, I was beyond happy just to make it through two rounds in the top division.

  • The Pascuales Bodyboard Pro is debuting on the IBC World Tour this July 3rd–9th. What do you think of Pascuales as a venue for a bodyboarding showcase?

I feel like Pascuales is one of the best beaches in Mexico for a world-class event. It’s one of the heaviest beach breaks in the world; it’s usually got size and tons of potential for both deep barrels and big air moves.

  • You’re known for a very radical, explosive style and for being a “contest machine” in all conditions. How do you train to stay at this level?

I think my level comes down to the fact that I paddle out even when the conditions are bad—I think that’s what makes the difference. Also, about 20 minutes before a heat, I find a spot to be alone, watch the conditions, and get my head right before hitting the water.

  • What are your biggest titles so far, and what are you aiming for in the future?

I’m a two-time Mexican National Champion. The title I’m chasing next is Junior World Champion.

  • Who are your idols or the riders you look up to?

The guys I look to for inspiration to keep improving are Tristan Roberts, Pierre-Louis Costes, and Tanner McDaniel.

  • What’s your favorite wave in Mexico and your favorite in the rest of the world?

My favorite in Mexico is Zicatela, and my favorite in the world is El Frontón.

  • Any last words, shoutouts, or anything else you’d like to add?

Huge thanks to my family for their unconditional support in everything I do. I also want to thank all my friends for always being there for me.
