The 2023 Gran Canaria Frontón King held its second day of competition today with good conditions for the development of the third round of the men’s division, with waves between 2 -3 meters, very high scores and heart-stopping heats were seen today.
In the men’s eliminatory round – in which only the best two from each 4 men heat, manage to advance – the surprise came with the elimination of the local Dailos Rodriguez at the hands of the Venezuelan Angelo Freda (2nd) and William Luján (1st). The three offered very good maneuvers but at the last moment Freda took second place with the brilliant execution of a backflip, and Luján from Galdar, took first place with two good barrels, leaving out Rodríguez, with the most presence in the podium to date in the history of this event not been able to advance beyond the second round in this eleventh edition.
Guillermo Cobo who was already king of the Frontón in 2014 – had an outstanding performance accumulating the highest total score of the day in this division. In this heat also advanced David Pérez, winner last year in the junior division and holder of the highs score to the first day of competition this year.
The local rider Kevin Orihuela and the young Chilean Joaquín Soto also passed with solvency to the next round, showing that they are great candidates, while the best single score wave of the day was for the local Gabriel Molina, with an 8.5 with an explosive pocket backflip.
Simon Andrieux, from France, also did the job and performed good maneuvers, and the day for this division ended in a heart-stopping heat where Telde rider Eduardo Rodríguez knew how to perfectly read the not-too-easy right-handers and managed to put a total of 13.50 advancing alongside the stylish Aitor Ojeda from Fuerteventura.
The juniors then took over, competing in three consecutive rounds until the end of the day and it is worth highlighting the very high level that the Canarians are demonstrating, currently recognized as the best youth team in the world in bodyboarding, which guarantees a promising future full of success.
The young man from Gáldar Mauro Bolaños, who passed his heat amply demonstrated why he has been chosen as one of the events Wildcards for this division and Nestor Reyes, who qualified in the last seconds with a very extreme backflip.
The day ended with a super tight non-elimination Round 4 of Juniors, when the Fronton was at its best condition of the day and the young promises knew how to take good advantage to impress the audience.
In this Round, we got to see the world’s top candidates for the title alongside the best of the previous rounds and offered a great show! The major outstanding were Alexander Montes and Gadiel Martel in heat 1, current Junior World Champ Jorge Hernandez and Guillerme Montenegro from Brazil, Gabriel Mendoza and Eros Rodrigues, and Nestor Reyes.
But in the last heat we closed the day with a mind-blowing performance from the Peruvian rider Micheel Yancce who obtained the best single and total score of the championship, executing a brutal inverted aerial score with 9.50 points. that will enter the list of candidates for the Red Bull Banana Challenge award, which will be granting USD 1000 to the best aerial maneuver of the entire event.
