INTERVIEW WITH JORGE CEBALLOS / DIRECTOR OF IQUIQUE BODYBOARD PRO

The 4th edition of the Iquique Bodyboard Pro will once again take place at La Punta 2, a volcanic rock reef break that offers both right and left waves with huge potential for tubes and maneuvers, featuring up to 3 sections. It’s known for having some of the best swell consistency and conditions in the world.

This major event is organized by the Illustrious Municipality of Iquique through the Municipal Sports Corporation of Iquique (CORMUDEPI).

The dates for the Iquique Bodyboard Pro, Men’s and Women’s Prime Series are set for the waiting period from June 13 to June 24. There will also be a Rising Series stage for Junior Men, which will be a one-day event on June 25, with space for only 32 competitors.

Remember, throughout the season, new Rising Series events have been added to the IBC calendar. The goal is to give juniors more opportunities within their countries, aiming to reduce expenses, travel, and missed school days. This way, Junior Men can earn points to qualify for one of the 48 spots in the big final, which will be held at Gran Canaria Frontón King in October.

We’re excited to share an interview with the event director, JORGE CEBALLOS, who will give us more info and details about the Iquique Bodyboard Pro 2025.

  • How did the Iquique Bodyboard Pro start?

The first edition was in 2019, but due to the pandemic, we couldn’t hold more events until 2022, when we returned as part of the South American leg of the IBC, and just like in 2024, when we held the 3rd edition. We’re always aiming to improve and bring a great show for Chile and the world!

  • What are the main goals of the event?

To keep promoting local and national bodyboarding, helping to develop athletes at a world-class level and showcasing the talent of Iquiqueños and Chileans to the world. Also, to open our city’s doors so everyone can enjoy one of the best places in the world for bodyboarding.

  • Iquique is known worldwide for its high-quality waves. What else would you highlight about this beautiful city?

As we recently shared, Iquique is considered the best urban reef in the world, thanks to its stunning geography with over 20 quality waves and 5 of international class within less than 15 kilometers. Plus, conditions are almost perfect year-round. That’s why we say Iquique is definitely an unmissable destination for bodyboarders!

Beyond surfing, it’s a city with a vibrant food scene thanks to its cultural fusion and high-quality seafood. It also offers many tourist attractions like Cerro Dragón, a beautiful dune in the city where you can watch unforgettable sunsets, go sandboarding, try paragliding, walk along the coastal promenade, or explore the historic saltpeter ruins, among many other things!

  • The Rising Series for Junior Men in Iquique has just been confirmed. What do you think about this new structure of the IBC with the Rising Series project?

I think it brings a lot of positive things to our sport because it’s a great opportunity for more local young athletes to train on the World Tour and get ranked without having to spend so much money on long trips and waits. It’s also a fantastic tool to bring new countries into the World Tour since it’s much more accessible in terms of organization and cost. Plus, this aligns perfectly with the goals of the Illustrious Municipality of Iquique and its city council, who have always been committed to the future of our sport—our Juniors—and this time was no different.

  • About the institutions or brands supporting or making this event possible:

The most important and fundamental support comes from the Illustrious Municipality of Iquique, who have always worked hard to promote bodyboarding and recognize it as part of our city’s culture.

  • We know Chile is a major global power in our sport. What do you think about this new generation of Chilean bodyboarders?

Definitely, we’ll have a World Champion very soon. Chile has a long history with bodyboarding, and it’s been really rewarding to see that over the last five years, there’s always been one or more Chileans in the top of the world rankings. So, we know that the day we can all celebrate that title is close!

  • Here’s a space to thank, greet, or share whatever you want:

Thanks to the Illustrious Municipality of Iquique and its Municipal Sports Corporation for continuing to support this important event in our city. Thanks also to companies like ZOFRI, ERIZOS, and Hotel Cavancha, who contribute to IBP 2025 through their expertise. Thanks to all the local riders who warmly welcome visitors, to every club and school working daily to grow this sport, and to the IBC World Tour for their constant support in organizing this event.
