THE 2023 EDITION OF THE ANTOFAGASTA BODYBOARD FESTIVAL HAS BEGUN
- Big waves marked the opening day of the global event taking place at Playa Llacolén.
- Organizers called upon the entire Antofagasta community to enjoy this sport.
As the premier sports event in the region, the Antofagasta Bodyboard Festival (ABF) commenced with its opening day at the awe-inspiring wave known as “La Cúpula” at Playa Llacolén. A total of 180 riders from diverse corners of the world congregated in the city to initiate the first of eleven days of the event, which forms part of the International Bodyboard Corporation’s (IBC) global circuit.

Commencing at 7 am, the athletes began showcasing their skills on waves that, at times, exceeded 3 meters. The first category to take to the water was the OPEN MEN (Round 1), where Chilean rider Cristóbal Fernández, representing Easter Island, distinguished himself and secured first place in his heat. “I am delighted to compete in this stage of the circuit. Today, we encountered significant waves, adding to the demanding nature of the event. This wave possesses intricate technicalities, needing accurate reading. I had a promising start today, and my intention is to progress further in the subsequent rounds. To achieve that, I consistently prepare my mind and body,” he shared.
Similarly, Arturo Soto, the director of ABF, expressed his joy at being able to organize this world-class sports event once more. “We are once again demonstrating that Antofagasta has the ideal conditions to host an event of this caliber. Throughout the years, we have successfully established our own distinctive identity, which athletes from around the world truly appreciate. We warmly invite the Antofagasta community to join us at Playa Llacolén and enjoy a delightful day filled with surprises.”
The Antofagasta Bodyboard Festival will continue tomorrow, Friday the 19th, when athletes are required to be present at 6:30 am to find out their respective competition heats.
Activities
One of the main characteristics of ABF is its complementary activities, where, in addition to sports, other areas such as tourism, the environment, social innovation, and a healthy lifestyle are enhanced. In 2023, through the Mr. Barber Foundation, two specific lines will be promoted: recycling and social well-being. “Together with different organizations, we will be supporting recycling management during each competition day by providing 30 recycling points for plastic and beverage cans. Additionally, we are participating in the Wellness Fair, where we will have various activities such as art therapy, environmental talks, yoga, therapeutic greenhouses promoting agro-education, and many more activities,” explained Mauricio Cobos, territorial manager of the Mr. Barber Foundation.
