AERIAL SHOWCASE AND HIGH DRAMA ON DAY 2 OF THE GRAN CANARIA FRONTÓN KING 2026

October 19, 2026

Chile's Cristóbal Tobar drops a massive 9-point backflip, throwing his hat in the ring for the Red Bull El Banana Challenge.

Gáldar, Gran Canaria, Spain – October 19, 2026

El Frontón, globally revered as "The Beast" of bodyboarding, served up a action-packed second day of competition on Monday, shaped by shifting swell dynamics and an extremely low tide coefficient. Hitting the water right at 8:00 AM local time to maximize daylight and favorable ocean conditions, riders faced cleaner, smaller waves early on with sets hovering around six feet, demanding maximum tactical precision and wave selection.

The maneuver of the day belonged to Chilean standout Cristóbal Tobar. Demonstrating incredible synergy with the Gran Canarian reef break, the young charger launched a massive backflip to earn a 9.00 ride from the judges. The score puts Tobar squarely in contention for the Red Bull El Banana Challenge, awarded to the single best aerial maneuver of the event.

"Last year I also kicked off my campaign with a 9.50. Conditions were different today, but as a competitor you have to adapt to whatever the ocean throws at you," Tobar said following his heat-winning performance.

First Eliminations in the Junior Division

The action-packed day saw the completion of the Junior Men's Elimination Round (Round 2), locking in the first 12 event eliminations. However, the title contenders delivered under pressure: reigning world champion Louka Zaninotto of France, world runner-up Alberto Pérez of Spain, and Peru's Lucciano Campos all stamped their tickets into the next round.

The international qualification framework established by the IBC World Tour brings together 48 up-and-coming talents from 11 nations, all earning their slots through the Rising Series stops in Australia, Morocco, Peru, Mexico, the Maldives, and Spain. The circuit format continues to prove its value, streamlining travel for young athletes and helping them balance elite international competition with their education.

The Beast Awakens for the Men's Division

As the morning progressed and the Men's division took center stage, El Frontón showed its fiercer side. With heavy sets building toward the ten-foot mark, the performance level in the water skyrocketed.

Local chargers Javier Domínguez and Jonathan Vega delivered standout performances, putting together some of the highest-scoring combinations of the day before dropping tides forced officials to call a safety hold at 3:00 PM local time. After monitoring the reef break, event officials officially called off competition for the day due to hazardous safety conditions.

Tristan Roberts on the Brink of World Championship Glory

The event is rapidly heading toward a climax as all eyes turn to Round 4, where the World Tour Top 16 will make their event debuts. Heading the pack is South Africa's Tristan Roberts, current IBC World Tour rating leader. Roberts needs only to suit up and complete his opening heat at El Frontón to mathematically secure the 2026 World Championship title.

The waiting period for the Gran Canaria Frontón King runs from October 17 through October 31, giving event organizers a 15-day window to select the optimal six days of wind, swell, and tide conditions.
